<image:title>Blog - Event - Finding Value in ERM</image:title>
<image:caption>We were lucky to have Dr. Mark Beasley, Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and the Director of the ERM Initiative at North Carolina State University, back for a second time! He was also the keynote the first year I organized the event, but our network has grown and many people who hadn’t heard him speak the first year were interested to hear from him. He talked about the growing complexities of uncertainty, the differences in risk perceptions across the organization, and the blind spots that may exist. He suggested five opportunities for teasing out the unknowns: evaluate blind spots of others (it is easier after all to point out what others have done wrong!), assume the role of the competitor, name big assumptions, look for risk opportunities, and embed ERM in strategic initiative analysis. As Mark said in his conclusion – it is on us to demonstrate the value of ERM!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Event - Finding Value in ERM</image:title>
<image:caption>Håkan Jankensgård, Associate Professor in Corporate Finance at Lund University, challenged us to think harder about ERM’s value propositions and how they match up with the reality. But never fear, he still believes ERM has great potential value from: risk culture, risk governance, risk information, eliminating silos, finding the appropriate level of risk management, and proactive decision-support.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Abandoning Silos for Enterprise Risk Management</image:title>
<image:caption>“Traditionally”, that probably refers to large firms around 10 - 15 years ago and most small to medium firms still today, companies manage risk in silos. Think about grain silos, independent and isolated metal containers lined up out in the farmlands of Texas. They are useful, and they do their job of storing grain. Now think of a company, instead of containers of grain you have departments of people: purchasing, finance, treasury, sales, R&D, etc. They manage their risks; I’d guess most treasury departments and those in the supply chain would argue they are fantastic at managing risk. They very well might be, but they are doing it independently and isolated of each other.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - I give you SiloNyx. A blog about nixing risk management silos and replacing them with enterprise risk management. And in case enterprise risk management isn’t sexy enough for you as is, and I think there are at least a few dozen out there who find it pretty sexy, we aren’t just going to nix silos but we are sending them to the Greek goddess or personification of the night, Nyx. Let’s turn the lights out on the old-fashioned approach to risk management, abandon silos, and implement more strategic, more integrated, and better governed enterprise risk management!</image:title>

<image:title>About - I’m Sara! I’m a Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin and part of their Center for Risk Management and Insurance. I’m also affiliated with the University of Gothenburg and their Centre for Finance. I developed and teach the master’s degree course on Enterprise Risk Management for their Accounting and Financial Management program, 2020 will be my third year teaching ERM at GU. I also have done executive education in ERM for companies like SKF and IKEA. I’ve organized an ERM networking and speaking event at GU 4 years in a row. I wrote my PhD thesis on Enterprise Risk Management at Lund University and was awarded the Wallander fellowship in 2014. I have a few fairly well cited ERM publications, and I have a number of papers in the pipeline. If only I could channel the same energy I feel for this blog to my research, my co-authors would be happy.</image:title>
